If you talk to woodworkers they all have their own views on what is the right manner to do things. Like everything else, you can go and ask one question and get numerous opposite answers. One of the main inquiries a new craftman will ask is ,which is better: following plans or working from scratch? Here are some of the arguments raised for both parts of this enquiry.

To second the debate that is always easier to use woodworking plans, here are the components this is likely based on.

- For the beginner it is really the only way. The patterns hold everything they want to know to get started.

- Beginners have a hard time seeing how they want the accomplished project to look.

They have a genuine idea of what they need ,but they arent able to plan it out without some counseling.

- Plans save a lot time as there is not as much time expended on revising the project. Its all there in the plan, you just follow the step by step directions.

-The plans can be price savers. One, by the way they outline exactly what materials you are going to want. Then you dont consume money on buying items you dont require. Secondly you will trim waste because youre not as likely to mess up on your cuts and things like that.

That handles the support arguments for why woodworking plans are optimal, now lets look at the arguments of why working from scratch is advisable instead.

- Often if you have a particular item in mind that you would like to establish, then you may not be able to find the project for it. Often when individuals are constructing something they want it to be different. You wont get that when you are using plans.

- Just because its a woodwork plan, doesnt mean that it will be understandable or easy to follow. Sometimes the plans can get quite complicated. Also you may not be educated with some of the language that is written in the design.

- What country the projects were planned in could be an issue as well. For illustration measures and material could be contrasting.

- If you are an experienced woodworker or you are past the point of being a beginner then you will see that the plans will start to get boring. You may also begin to lose focus in the project is it is too elementary for you.

- One of the worst things that can materialise is they may not be right. For the novice this could be daunting. Mostly as you wont have the experience perhaps to prevent the fault before you make it, or be able to correct it once you have.

- You are able to acquire designing skills if you practise your own woodworking plans. In the beginning there will be a bit of trial and error. Once you have reached this stage you are not likely to be a novice so you will have a good idea as to what your own plan needs.

- Lastly, maybe the most fundamental factor is that your own design is more individualised. Once its complete you will have the gratification of recognizing it is entirely your work from beginning to finish. Furthermore, it is one of a kind, and it is not found anyplace else in the world!

There are several things you can do to relieve stress during the course of the day. Yoga can be very relaxing, however, this is not always an option for someone trapped behind a desk. However, there are many other options for you to consider when trying to calm down and de-stress from your environment. A simple water fountain can work wonders, remember it is the small things that can work the best. It is not only good practice to learn ways to relax, it is good for your health as well. The benefits to being able to successfully relieve stress are well known in the medical world.

There are several different types and models of indoor water fountains available. You can look around at your local store to find one that appeals to you the most. You can find one in any shape, size or even in different colors. The smaller ones work ideally when your space is limited. While you can purchase a larger, more elaborate one for your home. Someone may even give you a fountain as a gift for your birthday or Christmas.

Most models sit well on a tabletop or desk, they are just as great as the larger ones. All you need to operate one is some water and an electrical outlet. If it spills water though, this means that it is not working properly. Your fountain should be stable and not leak.

It is also important to remember that the proper amount of water is maintained in your fountain, this is essential if your fountain is going to work properly. You need to check the levels frequently if you use your fountain on a regular basis. Even if you only use your fountain occasionally, you still need to make sure the water level is adequate. It is never a good idea to let your fountain run out of water, it may cause your fountain to be damaged.

If it a very hot day, the water even on small backyard and shaded areas may evaporate more quickly than you realize. If you allow it to run dry, it can cause your landscape fountain motor to be damaged or burn up. Fountains are relatively simple to maintain. It is also important to note that your fountain needs to be cleaned occasionally, by adding some vinegar to the water. In much the same way you clean your coffee maker, the vinegar will run through the fountain, clean the parts and then you simply replace it with fresh water.

If you’re looking to make a statement with your landscaping, a fish pond is the answer. If you’re fortunate enough to have a large backyard, the addition of a pond can only enhance its appearance. But adding a pond to your property requires that you make a big commitment of time and energy. You have to choose a location, build the pond, and then maintain it so that it continues to be a delightful addition to your landscape.

Putting in a fish pond will make a big change to the look of your property, so take your time in choosing a location. Remember that once you install it, it’s permanent, unless you’re prepared to pay a lot of money to fix it. You’ll want to place your fish pond where there’s sufficient room for both the pond itself and the surrounding vegetation that will enhance it.

Beneath a tree is not a good location for a pond. Trees are constantly dropping leaves. Once they fall into the pond, you have to scoop them out. If you don’t, the plants and fish in your pond will certainly suffer. It’s also important to position the pond so it has optimal sunlight in order for the fish and plants to thrive.

Apart from the location, your next step is to determine the size and shape of pond that is best suited to your property and the overall effect you are trying to achieve. Consider the type of fish and water plants that you want to feature. For example, if you’re building a koi fish pond, it will need to be much larger than one that contains goldfish. You can choose from a variety of shapes in a hard shell pond liner, including round, square, oval, rectangular and kidney shaped. Or you can go with flexible pond liners that let you decide the shape.

Next, consider the maintenance requirements of your pond. Of course you want it to look beautiful each and every day. But your real concern should be the proper care of the fish and plants in the pond. Regular feeding of the fish and cleaning of the pond are essential. Make sure you read up on how to properly care for whatever type of fish you choose to stock, and also the requirements of any water plants in the pond.

There’s a considerable amount of time and effort involved in planning and installing a pond, but there’s also the maintenance to consider. So it’s essential that you’re truly committed to the whole idea before proceeding. However, if you’re up for the challenge, you can look forward to many years of pleasure from this lovely landscaping addition.

If you want to make a good impression on your friends and neighbors, then your lawn and garden may need some attention. The right landscaping materials and plants can enhance and beautify your home and increase its overall appeal.

You can turn your simple barren, bland yard into a work of art at a relatively affordable price, by doing it yourself.

Recently, in the past few years there have been many companies that have introduced a wide variety of bagged rocks and mulches. The newest line from Vigoro offers the landscaping artist over 26 varieties of products. They vary in size, color and shapes, so your possibilities are limitless.

Beautiful and decorative landscaping rock and mulch are a great way to improve your yard. Try using mulch to accent your garden, flower beds, driveway and walkway. Mulch also provides added benefits, other than being attractive they improve your soil and plants. Mulch is good at controlling and slowing erosion, maintaining proper moisture levels, and it controls weed population and soil insulation.

Here are just a few helpful tips when choosing and adding mulch to your yard or landscape:

1.) Choose a mulch that lasts a long time and is heavy, this prevents it from being easily washed away from heavy rains.

2.) Choose a mulch with looser structure to allow better soil aeration

3.) Make sure to apply mulch at the proper time, during late spring it will help preserve water and reduce ground temperature

4.) When applying mulch make sure it is 1-2 inches deep. A finer, more fluffy mulch should be applied 3-4 inches deep.

5.) Ensure mulch is applied evenly by raking through it with your hands

6.) Water the mulch after applying

7.) Make sure to move mulch a few inches away from plants and tree bottoms

To prevent grass growth and keep your plants in a healthy state, there is a mulch made by Vigoro called “Mulch with Weed Stop”. This mulch is the first ever to contain a pre-emergent herbicidal agent. It controls weeds for up to 4 months, while allowing your annuals and spring bulbs, shrubbery and trees to continue growing and thriving for an ever-beautiful landscaping or garden. It is the only mulch that contains natural forest products and is certified by the Mulch and Soil Council.

French Garden Designs

by Melissa Burgendy

The simplest definition for the word horticulture is the cultivation of a garden, Hortus, in Latin, means garden and cultura means cultivation. Garden cultivation is considered a form of art and, like all art forms, it has different styles.

It was in the 17th and 18th centuries that for the first time the traditional French garden style was developed during the Baroque and Rococo periods. The gardens of the era were majestic exhibitions of power and riches constructed by royalty and aristocrats for the purpose of impressing guests. You will find that traditional French garden style is very formal, they are in fact inspired by the ancient classical gardens. Spanning level ground, these geometrically shaped gardens are very well planned out in regards to their design. A common characteristic of such gardens are man-made terraces. There are also elaborately designed stairs that connect one terrace to another. French gardens often feature large water pools which provide reflective properties and are easily built given the flat landscape. Here you will find a list of the main components of traditional, formal, French garden design.

* Yards are contained of square frames and constantly shuddered by neat, squared bushes

* Flowerbeds are also geometrical in shape rectangular, oval or circular.

The French gardens which are formal have an important feature of Parterres in them. On the ground intricate geometric patterns are made using a variety of materials such as colored dirt, stones, gravel or flowers. Boxwood, lavender, and rosemary are usually used to line parterres. Exceptionally elaborate parterres are called parterres de broderies, embroidery parterres. Visitors can view parterres from garden terraces.

* The water features are most often canals and large pools. Most of these water fountains have engines to operate them.

* Allees, meaning axes or rides, is the term used for the garden walks or pathways, bordered by trees or neatly clipped hedges that provided the framework of the French garden style. A fountain or accenting garden ornament of some kind is the usual destination of such straight pathways.

* French gardens feature many ornamental objects from statues and columns to birdbaths and sundials. These should be arranged symmetrically. For instance, at the end of an alley.

* Plants: Color is the foundation of the planting pattern. French gardens predominantly use pastel colors with a touches of yellow, red or orange and some lilac and blue. Ideally, gardeners should choose plants that bloom all year round.

* Primarily French in origin, and available as an optional feature, Orangerie is a large glass-enclosed room in the garden where you’ll find lemon, lime, and orange trees blooming during the cold winter months.

* Herb gardens are often included in traditional French gardens. The neat French garden style usually includes separate areas for a fruit garden, a rose garden and sometimes a herb garden too. The herb gardens are another feature of the garden and are not just herb patches. Paving is used in a specific pattern a chessboard pattern or a circular pattern, laid out like the spokes of a wheel. Seats are often placed in the center or in a corner of herb gardens. Common French herbs include lavender, rosemary, sage, marjoram, thyme, and sweet bay.

A famous example of the traditional French formal garden style described above is the Versailles Gardens located just outside Paris. The famous landscape architect Andr Le Ntre was employed by King Louis the fourth to make the Versailles Gardens in the year 1661. Gardens are huge, very huge, on the far left of the Chateau de Versailles. Not only do these gardens feature many expensive ornaments, they also boast carefully cared for lawns and numerous blooming flowers. The garden boasts 1,400 fountains which are probably the most interesting feature. To bring water from the Seine River into the garden, a large system of pumps, reservoirs, and fourteen water wheels was constructed. But still, there could never be enough water for all the fountains to be run at once. During Louis IV’s reign, the fountains would be turned on, one by one, as the king approached. Today, they are only operated on Sundays.

If you aren’t planning a visit to France, you can still get an idea of the traditional formal French garden style by visiting the Conservatory Garden in the northern sector of New York City’s Central Park.

Despite the fact that traditional and formal gardening styles of France influenced the designs of gardens around the world, not all French gardens are traditional. France has many less formal gardens, including the Giverney garden overflowing with blooming flowers as shown in Monet’s beautiful paintings.

It’s amazing how many great garden and outdoor structures are available these days. When you have these kinds of choices, it’s hard to decide what will look best in your yard. Sometimes the best way to go about deciding is to look at your family activity and see which one fits the best.

Trellises are an inexpensive way to give your yard and garden that little something without breaking the bank. They can be used all over your yard and garden and coupled with some nice climbing plants with blooms or vines, they make wonderful focal points. Since they come in so many shapes and sizes you should be able to find great trellises for any situation.

If you’re looking to get more bang for your buck, try an arbor. They’re very popular in gardens and can be used to create stand alone focal points in your yard. Using arbors with trellised sides can be a wonderful way of utilizing the climbing vines that will fill in the sides and top thus creating an elegant canopy throughout the arch that is just lovely.

This next structure has an almost meditative feel that cannot be explained. It’s been said that since it lets in nature and the suns rays, the pergola allows you to commune with nature while you are eating or just having fun with family and friends. Of course, sitting in silence and just enjoying your life is another way to experience nature under a pergola. It will provide you with partial shade and, if you choose, can be filled with climbing vines and plants that will fill the slats with a canopy of sorts to create even more shade.

If you are a family that parties, a gazebo may just be the right outdoor structure for you. It can be used all by itself out in your yard or to support other activities such as a backyard swimming pool. Having a gazebo for dinner parties or for that midnight dance with that special someone are all great reasons to choose this particular structure for your yard.

You may also be looking for a couple of other structures that are not often talked about; raised beds and bridges. If you want to create small flower beds around your yard or around a tree, raised beds are a perfect way to do that and they are easy since there is no digging involved. Bridges, on the other hand are a great way to enhance your landscape, especially around water features and low lying areas in your yard.
